Introduction
World Arthritis Day 2024 was globally commemorated on the 12th of October. Themed "Informed Choices, Better Outcomes," celebrations highlighted the importance of providing patients with appropriate and accurate information when it comes to the management rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs). As the volume of health information continues to grow, it's essential for rheumatologists and other healthcare professionals to help their patients living with RMDs to navigate treatment complexities and support them in making evidence-based decisions. The Arthrheuma Society of Kenya (ARSK) celebrated World Arthritis Day 2024 by holding various exciting events across the country.
ARSK's Commitment to Patient Empowerment
The Rheumatology team at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, led by Dr. Naomi Mumo and Dr. Fred Otieno showcased the power of teamwork, with rheumatologists, nurses, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals collaborating to provide comprehensive care. The celebrations emphasized the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and the importance of evidence-based patient education in the management of RMDs.

A Focus on Patient Education and Advocacy
ARSK also organized a live webinar featuring talks by rheumatologists Dr. Sybil Nakitare, Dr. Eugene Kamlan, and Dr. C. Omondi. The experts shared valuable insights, answered patients questions, and emphasized the significance of early intervention and adherence to treatment plans in the management of RMDs.

In Eldoret, the rheumatology team, led by Dr. Beryl Ganda, engaged with patients and caregivers to discuss the importance of patient knowledge and empowerment in the management of RMDs. The session focused on the benefits of early action, promoting the development of collaborative management plans between patients and rheumatologists. The event also served as a platform to raise greater awareness about RMDs and advocate for increased support and allocation of resources channeled towards their management.

Rheumatologists Professor Omondi Oyoo and Dr. Beryl Ganda also delivered engaging health talks on local radio stations, educating the public on the critical role of patient education and empowerment in managing RMDs.

Overall, the WAD 2024 celebrations in Kenya were a great success, highlighting the vital role that collaboration among patients, rheumatologists, and other healthcare professionals plays in the effective management of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases.
